Great opening day photo: Texeira slams one #Yankees #Yanks #MLB

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Ok, so Mark Texeira hasn’t been hitting all that great in April, but he hit this nice shot on Opening Day at Yankee Stadium, April 13, 2010.

In my photo below, his bat is about to strike the ball for a double.

Exclusive photo: A-Rod finally gets his ring #Yankees #Yanks #MLB

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Nearly 16 years after he arrived in the major leagues, my photo below shows Alex Rodriguez finally getting his world championship ring at Yankee Stadium, opening day, April 13, 2010.

a-rod-gets-ring

Hey, A-Rod! Welcome to the same club as Roger Clemens and Wade Boggs, who also struggled for years to get a ring before getting their first ring playing as Yankees.

Also shown with A-Rod are Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, and Joe Girardi–who have plenty of rings of their own.

The only folks not having a good time were the Angels in the background, who were eliminated by A-Rod and the Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the 2009 ALCS.

Stick around for great photos of Yankee Stadium and the Yankees. If you love the Yankees, you’ll love my book Yankee Stadium: The Final Game, which captures every moment of the last game ever played at the old Yankee Stadium on September 21, 2008.

On April 24 and April 25, I will be signing copies of my book at the Long Island National sports collectible show with 300 dealers and a bunch of baseball stars at Hofstra University on Long Island. Yankee Stadium food court: Where’s the best food? #Yankees #Yanks #MLB

Monday, April 19th, 2010

One of the things I loved about the new Yankee Stadium, despite its faults, was some of the great new choices in food.

But that was 2009. At Opening Day 2010, I found some of my favorites gone. What happened to the Arthur Avenue Italian deli? Their eggplant and chicken parmigiana were my favorites.

But they’ve disappeared from Yankee Stadium.  And the Boar’s Head deli at the field level food court behind home? Gone in 2010! Also, I’d heard that they were going to open up a second Lobel’s steak sandwich place in right field, so people wouldn’t have to walk all the way out to left field and wait behind 50 people. No way. There’s no Lobel’s so far in right field. So, I settled for four chicken tenders for $7.50. They were decent, but get pretty boring quickly.

food-court

Hey Hank and Hal! Please bring back the Arthur Avenue Italian deli and sandwich place to the Yankee Stadium food court. And put a second Lobel’s in right field!

And if you miss the old Yankee Stadium, with its greasy french fries and overpriced sausage and pepper sandwiches, check out my book, Yankee Stadium: The Final Game, which has many beautiful color photographs of that last game, including the lemonade guy and the workers at the old Yankee Stadium food courts.

Thanks.

Exclusive Photo: Matsui gets his ring at Yankee Stadium #Yankees #Yanks #MLB

Monday, April 19th, 2010

On Opening Day 2010 at Yankee Stadium, most of the Yankees received their 2009 world championship rings. The team they defeated in the 2009 ALCS, the Angels, watched with boredom and envy.

However, both the Yankees and Angels applauded when Hidecki Matsui, now an Angel, came out to get his ring.

In this photo I shot at Yankee Stadium on April 13, Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra join Yankees manager Joe Girardi (#28) at the ceremonial table.

It was nice to see the Angels be good sports, even though it must have been painful for veterans of their 2009 team to watch.

Photo: Old Yankee Stadium being torn down #Yankees #MLB #Yanks

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

On Opening Day at Yankee Stadium here’s a photo what the old Yankee Stadium was doing. Those are the remains of the first base/right field stands behind the crane:

deconstruct-april

We all knew this day would come. That’s why I preserved the final game at Yankee Stadium in my book, Yankee Stadium: The Final Game. I’d rather remember Yankee Stadium the way it looked that last glorious night in September, 2008, than the above skeleton of Yankee Stadium. Soon, when it’s entirely gone, the only memory we’ll have of its last game is my book. Check it out; it will preserve the old Yankee Stadium for you forever!

On April 24 and April 25, I will be signing copies of my book at the Long Island National sports collectible show with 300 dealers and a bunch of baseball stars at Hofstra University on Long Island. Drop by, say hello, and pick up an autographed copy of Yankee Stadium: The Final Game for friends and relatives.

Now it’s on to the 2010 baseball season and the Yankees’ quest for a 28th World Championship in Yankee Stadium.

Hey Yankees: Post your 2010 game times! #Yankees #MLB #Yanks

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

It’s just 56 days until the Yankees raise their 209 World Championship flag over Yankee Stadium on Opening Day 2010. But the Yankee home schedule still doesn’t list any game times. Why?

First, it makes it hard for anyone trying to make plans for the spring or summer. Like for your kid’s birthday. Or on a holiday weekend. I’m just sayin’

Earth to Yankees: Some of us plan our lives more than 2 weeks ahead!earth-face

Second, it makes it difficult to buy or sell tickets, such as on StubHub. How can you buy tickets when you don’t know if a Thursday game might be at 1 PM, when you’re supposed to be at work.

Earth to Yankees: Some of us work 9 to 5 on weekdays!!
earth-face

Here’s a sample few games posted right now on the “preliminary schedule” at the Yankee Web site:

Note that the game times for road games in Boston, Tampa Bay, Oakland, and Los Angeles, are already posted. Hmmmm. But the Yankee Stadium game times are all TBD. It’s January 16, folks. How come those four teams can post their game times, but the Yankees can’t?

nyy-sked

OK, let’s take a look at StubHub, MLB’s official site to buy or sell tickets. Surely that would show game times; how else would they expect people to buy and sell? But lookit this:

stubsked

As Scooter Rizzuto would say, Holy Cow! holy_cow

…or maybe even….holy_cannoli

All the Yankee Stadium games are listed at 1 PM.

Come on Yankees! There’s a recession on, loyal fans are sticking with you, despite your having hiked prices and pushed us into less desirable Yankee Stadium seats last year. And not built a dome over Yankee Stadium, so that we have to put up with rainouts for the rest of our lives.

The least you can do is post your game times so we can make plans and buy/sell tickets. The least.

Get with it!

Don’t forget to check out my book on the Final Game at Yankee Stadium.

McGwire out, Maris in (historic newspaper headline) #Yankees #NY #MLB #Bombers

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

With Mark McGwire’s admission that he used steroids to set his 1998 home run record, Roger Maris is still the 162-game home run champion. He hit his 61st home run at Yankee Stadium On October 1, 1961. Here’s a souvenir of that time that I saved, the New York Daily Mirror from September, 1961, when Maris hit his 56th home run at Yankee Stadium.

Yankee souvenirs: Pay $80 for a dirt clump? #Yankees #MLB

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Which souvenir of the old Yankee Stadium would you rather have?
This $80 clump of dirt paperweight for your desk?

steiner-dirt1

Yes, you can stare at the dirt every day for the rest of your life and then conjure up memories of the old Yankee Stadium (which, by the way, is being destroyed by the same people who want to sell you this expensive pinch of dirt).

Or, for about twenty bucks, you can own Yankee Stadium:The Final Game, a beautiful book of photos and memories of the glorious final game at Yankee Stadium on September 21, 2008. Monument park. The team photo. The final out. They’re all there. Plus an exclusive vintage shot of Yankee Stadium on opening day 1965 that you can find nowhere else.

This book has received rave reviews by several Yankee blogs and by two noted baseball authors, plus it has been featured in USA Today Sports Weekly. Available at Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Check the book out at YankeeStadiumTheFinalGame.com.

Yankee Stadium: What’s with the scoreboard? #Yankees #MLB

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Something’s amiss with whoever operates the Yankee Stadium right field scoreboard. At Sunday’s Yankees/White Sox game, they put up a zero in the bottom of 5th when there was nothing in the top. Oops! In more than 40 years of watching Yankee games, I’ve never seen the bottom of the 5th precede the top. The next inning came this screwup:

scoreboard

Both of these scoreboard shots were taken at the same time; the right field scoreboard (top) is one hit short; the main scoreboard (bottom) is correct. So who is this person that can’t keep simple things straight, like which inning it is, or how many hits there are? Maybe somebody’s dim-witted nephew? C’mon Hank and Hal! This is Yankee Stadium, the premier sports venue in the world! Get a scoreboard operator who knows how to count!!

Yankees post-season tickets will cost a fortune! #Yankees #MLB

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

How much will Yankee post-season tickets cost to the ALDS, ALCS, and World Series? A hell of a lot!
money-flies
I predict, for a “mediocre “seat,” (not downstairs in the infield) these ticket prices:
ALDS: $100
ALCS: $140
WS: $250 to $300

Below, for example, is how Yankee post-season ticket prices have risen over the past 12 years (These are for Reserved MVP in infield, section M14)
Note that the biggest increases didn’t start until the team started losing in the post-season. Coincidence??

ALDS
1997 $24, 1998 $30, 1999 $35, 2000 $35, 2001 $40, 2004 $60, 2005 $70. 2006 $80
ALCS
1998 $45, 2000 $50, 2001 $70, 2004 $90, 2005 $112, 2006 $120
World Series
1998 $100, 1999 $100, 2000 $110, 2001 $110, 2002 $110, 2003 $110, 2004 $140, 2005 $140, 2006 $200

Don’t forget to check out my book about the final game at Yankee Stadium: Yankee Stadium: The Final Game.
